Careers Programme Information
At South Shore Academy, we are committed to raising the aspirations of all our pupils. Guided by our core values—Ambition, Purpose, and Achievement—we ensure every member of our school community is encouraged to set their sights high, make a positive impact, and prepare for a successful future.
A fundamental aim of our careers provision is to equip pupils with self-development and career management skills, empowering them to make informed, confident choices about their next steps in education, training, or employment.
Regardless of background or starting point, every pupil at South Shore Academy is supported to aim high within a culture of genuine equality of opportunity. Our careers programme delivers this through:
-
Dedicated careers education during Morning Meetings and PSHE lessons.
-
Inspiring guest speakers and drop-in guidance sessions.
-
Regular encounters with external employers and stakeholders.
-
Visits and taster days at leading local colleges and universities.
Beginning in Year 7, our programme provides statutory, independent, and completely impartial careers advice so that all pupils understand the full spectrum of academic and technical pathways available to them.
Developing Employability Across the Curriculum
Preparation for life beyond school extends across our entire curriculum. Key transferable skills—including teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and resilience—are integrated into daily classroom teaching across all academic subjects.
Employer Encounters & Guest Speakers
In line with the Skills and Post-16 Act 2022, we provide all pupils with meaningful encounters with technical education and training providers. Pupils complete a minimum of four encounters between Year 8 and Year 11 (at least two during Years 8–9 and two during Years 10–11) to help them build a clear understanding of the modern workplace, required qualifications, and industry expectations.
College & University Taster Days
We encourage pupils to take an active role in planning their post-16 pathways. Throughout Key Stage 4, pupils participate in college taster days, university visits, and careers fairs to experience further education environments first-hand. We are proud to support our young people as they transition to outstanding local destinations, including Blackpool Sixth Form, Blackpool and The Fylde College, and Cardinal Newman College.
Unifrog & Work Experience
-
Unifrog Platform: We utilise the Unifrog online portal to give pupils a unified space to explore pathways, draft applications, and track their personal development.
-
Work Experience: Pupils are guided towards workplace opportunities, including virtual work experience placements, employer insights, and vocational visits during Key Stage 4.
Provider Access Policy (Baker Clause)
South Shore Academy welcomes training providers, FE colleges, and employers to speak directly with our pupils about approved education or training options. We fully comply with our legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997 (the 'Baker Clause').
